With technological advancement and growing uncertainty amid the global pandemic, we have adapted to new ways of working, rehashed our priorities and business strategies with safety at the epicenter of our operations. Today, most large industrial companies facing workplace hazards have a devoted health, safety, and environment (HSE) management system that ensures safety for not only the employees but customers as well.

Nurturing HSE policies and spreading them across various verticals of the organization will enable employees to be more agile about safety policies. These can be reflected in sustainable business decisions, having a positive impact on society and the environment.

Building a safe workplace by focusing on customers and employees

A robust HSE management system is the force behind ensuring safety and security and improving the overall health of an organization. At ABB, we have been working towards making safety a parameter for our systems and solutions that are implemented across various industries worldwide. But one may ask how can safety become a core value through a HSE management system?

To bring in safety in all spheres of the work environment, making our employees and customers aware of existing policies is of utmost importance. To be able to achieve that, several training programs emphasizing safety and sustainability as a part of the HSE framework are designed to empower employees and make safety a part of their day-to-day work. These training programs include continuous improvement programs, electrical safety programs, safety measures for the management and safety masterclasses. With such training programs, for example in ABB, we have been able to develop long-standing customer relationships that allowed us to expand our footprint across industries and geographies, while customers benefit from strengthened market position, profit margins and most importantly, support in achieving their sustainability goals.

Looking ahead

Safety and sustainability are the two sides of the same coin. For example, besides making safety a core component of our business decisions at ABB, we are focused on building a low-carbon society by inducing carbon neutrality in our operations and supporting our customers in reducing annual CO₂ emissions. ABB aims to support its customers to reduce their annual CO2-equivalent emissions by more than 100 Mt by 2030. In addition, 80 percent of ABB products and solutions are covered by a circularity approach which allows our customers to meet their sustainability targets.

Hence, detailed safety training programs coupled with a drive towards building a strong safety culture will enable employees and customers to significantly reduce incidents, optimize productivity and improve plant performance. In 2022, lets us keep safety as our focus even in our daily work which will help us build a safer and more sustainable future. Prioritizing safety of systems, employees and customers will ensure fewer incidents, reduce maintenance costs, and optimize productivity.
