GENERIS THE NEXT GENERATION OF AC DRIVES REGENERATIVE 4 QUADRANT AC DRIVE

REGENERATIVE 4 QUADRANT AC DRIVE

A traditional AC drive, or inverter, takes the three-phase AC mains and converts it into a DC voltage with a combination of a rectifier and smoothing capacitor. This ‘DC link’ voltage is then chopped at high frequency to synthesize a variable voltage, variable frequency supply to the motor.

One way to recover the wasted energy is to add an ‘Active Front End’ (AFE) in front of the drive creating what is effectively two inverters back-to-back. However, there is still an intermediate DC link stage, making the solution both bulky and costly.

The Generis AC drive uses nine bidirectional power-semiconductor switches and high-speed Digital Signal Processing (DSP) techniques to synthesize the AC output waveforms. With no DC link, power can be transferred in both directions through the converter with no need for braking resistors or the addition of a second inverter to return energy to the supply. Torque and speed can be continuously controlled in all four quadrants of operation.
