Brock Solutions Selected to Upgrade Mohawk Valley Water Authority’s SCADA Systems

October 19, 2020

Brock Solutions has been selectedby the Mohawk Valley Water Authority (MVWA) to upgrade their water treatment and distribution SCADA systems. The MVWA covers 19 municipalities in Upstate New York, including the City of Utica and towns and villages of Oneida and Herkimer Counties. Operations cover over 700 miles of water main with 60 major facilities and 24 service zones servicing over 130,000 people.

Earlier this year, Brock worked with MVWA to develop a SCADA Water strategy that is practical, innovative and based on industry best-practices. This strategy encompassed reviewing the current landscape, talking to a variety of stakeholders across the organization, working with Brock’s industry partners, and bringing a best of breed approach that addresses the MVWA’s specific needs and goals.

The project will see the implementation of that strategy and will include upgrading legacy technologies to modern platforms like Inductive Automation Ignition and the latest Schneider Electric M580 PLCs. The strategy is also built around cybersecurity and includes multiple elements for securing, controlling, and monitoring all aspects of the system. This will position the MVWA with an environment that expands visibility, connectivity, analytics, proactive capabilities, and enables them to advance their SmartWater initiatives.

Brock will be also be providing brand new control panels, built in their in-house panel shop, serving as a turn-key solution provider for the MVWA. Brock will be leveraging experience in critical infrastructure projects to execute the cutover between legacy and new systems. This will employ extensive in-house testing, simulation, and validation before hardware is shipped to site, where it will be further validated by running in parallel with the current systems. The ultimate resultis a cutting-edge SCADA system for the MVWA, built on new hardware, and commissioned without service interruption to any of MVWA’s valuable customers.

Brock’s Experience in The Wastewater Industry

Brock has been providing engineering services to the water and wastewater industry since inception. They are fully engaged in the multi-year and multi-site automation upgrades to replace these systems. They leverage in careful planning and preparation, as well as practical hardware and software cutover strategies that:

  •    –   Minimize risk through extensive testing and emulation
  •    –   Minimize field wiring impact and installation phases
  •    –   Are fully reversible

Brock’s team, which include core automation engineers, process design engineers and QA/QC auditors, ensure solutions are compliant with municipal water/wastewater requirements. Additionally, their in-house panel fabrication capabilities differentiate them as a one-stop-shop for large upgrade programs.
